Description

Judd-165b, Pollock-191, rated R.8 — among the rarest patterns in the entire 1854 cent series. The obverse features the hook-neck flying eagle design surrounded by thirteen stars with the date below, consistent with the broader J-163 through J-165 family. The reverse carries the ONE CENT denomination within a wreath and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border, but is struck from a distinct die identifiable by three leaves positioned beneath the E in STATES — a diagnostic feature that separates the extremely rare J-165b from the visually similar J-163 and J-165 reverses. Struck in bronze with a plain edge. The R.8 rarity rating indicates that only two or three specimens exist, making this one of the most elusive patterns from the Mint's extensive mid-1850s cent experimentation program. Any appearance at auction would be a significant numismatic event.
