Coin Details
Description
Judd-165a, Pollock-190. This original striking of the J-165a employs a variation of the hook-neck flying eagle obverse found on the J-163 through J-165 series, paired with a ONE CENT wreath reverse. Struck in copper with a plain edge, the piece measures 27.5mm in diameter and weighs approximately 10.89 grams — dimensions that align closely with the large cent rather than the reduced-size small cent that would eventually prevail. The J-165a is distinguished from the closely related J-163 and J-165 by subtle die differences in the reverse wreath configuration. As an original striking rather than a later restrike, this piece dates to the actual period of experimentation in 1854 when the Mint was actively testing flying eagle designs. Very few specimens are known to collectors, placing this among the rarer varieties in the extensive family of 1854 cent patterns.
