Description

Judd-164, Pollock-189, rated R.5. A restrike production of the bronze flying eagle cent pattern, struck from the same dies as the original J-164 at a later date. The hook-neck eagle obverse and undersized ONE CENT wreath reverse are identical in design to the original, though the die state may show progression. Struck in bronze with a plain edge on a large cent-sized planchet. Like many restrikes from this era, this piece was produced to satisfy collector demand during a period when the Philadelphia Mint freely accommodated numismatists with impressions from earlier pattern dies. The combined population of original and restrike J-164 specimens, rated R.5, indicates that approximately 30 to 75 pieces exist across both issues — making this one of the more accessible hook-neck flying eagle patterns from 1854, though still scarce by any ordinary standard.
