Description

Judd-134 (Pollock-161, R.7) is a die trial of the restrike 1852 Seated Liberty dollar, struck in copper with a reeded edge and subsequently silver plated. The plating gives the coin the outward appearance of a silver dollar while the underlying copper composition identifies it as an experimental or trial piece rather than a coin intended for circulation. The significance of this pattern stems largely from the rarity of the 1852 date in the regular Seated Liberty dollar series. With only 1,100 originals produced, the 1852 dollar was already a coveted rarity by the time these restrikes were made. The die trial in copper represents a step in the restrike production process, created to test the dies before committing precious metal planchets, or produced as a collectible piece in its own right for the active collector market of the late 1850s and 1860s.
