Description

Judd-131c is another composition variant of the 1851 unperforated ring cent restrike, the "c" suffix designating a specific alternative alloy used with the J-131 dies. The obverse and reverse designs remain consistent with the entire 1850-1851 ring cent series: "CENT" and the date with ornamental rosettes on the obverse, "USA" and "ONE TENTH SILVER" on the reverse. The multiple suffixed variants of J-131 (a through c and beyond) illustrate that the Mint tested a wider range of compositions in 1851 than in 1850, reflecting a growing urgency to resolve the cent composition question as the large copper cent became increasingly uneconomical. Each variant represents a distinct metallic recipe evaluated for its striking properties, wear resistance, visual appeal, and cost-effectiveness. These are among the rarest pieces in the 1850-1851 ring cent pattern series, as variant-composition strikings were typically produced in very small quantities.
