Description
The 1851 Humbert fifty-dollar piece with 887 fineness and lettered edge represents an upgrade in gold purity from the earlier 880 issues. The increase from 880 to 887 thousandths fine reflected improved refining techniques at the U.S. Assay Office and brought the gold content closer to (though still below) the federal standard of 900 fine. This higher fineness meant each slug contained slightly more pure gold, enhancing its value and acceptability in commerce. The obverse retains the heraldic eagle and Humbert’s full title inscription. The reverse engine-turned pattern now displays 887 THOUS. In place of the earlier 880 marking. The lettered edge continues the AUGUSTUS HUMBERT UNITED STATES ASSAYER OF GOLD, CALIFORNIA 1851 inscription, providing authentication around the entire circumference of the octagonal piece. The 887 fineness varieties are generally considered slightly scarcer than the 880 issues, as they represent a later and shorter production period within the 1851 calendar year. The distinction between 880 and 887 fineness varieties is fundamental to collecting Humbert slugs, as each fineness level represents a distinct die preparation and production run.
Rarity Notes
Rare. The 887 lettered edge variety is scarcer than the 880 lettered edge varieties. Estimates suggest 40-75 examples survive.
