Description
The 1850 Norris, Gregg & Norris Stockton gold half eagle represents the partnership's second year of production, now attributed to operations in or associated with Stockton, California. The shift from Benicia City to a Stockton connection in 1850 reflects the dynamic and mobile nature of Gold Rush enterprises, which frequently relocated to follow economic opportunity. Stockton, in California's Central Valley, served as a major supply depot and gateway to the southern mining districts during the Gold Rush. A minting operation there would have been strategically positioned to serve miners and merchants in some of the richest gold-bearing regions of the Sierra Nevada foothills. The 1850 Stockton half eagle is considerably scarcer than the combined 1849 production, suggesting either a shorter production run or reduced commercial success. By 1850, the California private coinage market was becoming increasingly crowded. The Stockton half eagle represents the firm's final known product, making it the closing chapter of California's first private gold coinage enterprise.
Rarity Notes
