Description

The 1850 Mormon Five Dollar uniface copper obverse restrike preserves the obverse die of the second-year Deseret Mint half eagle in copper. The 1850-dated die is significantly rarer than its 1849 counterpart, reflecting the much smaller original production of the 1850 half eagle. The obverse design of the 1850 half eagle is essentially identical to the 1849 issue, maintaining the "HOLINESS TO THE LORD" inscription, All-Seeing Eye, radiating glory, and bishop’s mitre that defined the Mormon gold series. The primary distinguishing feature is the date. The plain edge on this restrike is consistent with the majority of uniface copper restrikes from the Mormon gold dies. As the scarcest dated die in the half eagle series, the 1850 obverse restrike holds particular appeal for collectors assembling comprehensive collections of Mormon gold die impressions.

Rarity Notes

Very rare. The 1850-dated die produced fewer restrikes than the 1849 die, making this among the scarcer dated copper restrikes.
