Coin Details
Description
The circa 1850 Indian Peace Medal bearing the portrait of President Millard Fillmore was produced for diplomatic distribution to Native American leaders during Fillmore's presidency, which lasted from July 1850 to March 1853 following the death of Zachary Taylor. Fillmore signed the Compromise of 1850, which among its provisions organized the New Mexico and Utah territories where extensive Indian diplomacy was required. The obverse features a right-facing bust of Fillmore with appropriate presidential inscriptions. The reverse carries the standard clasped-hands design with crossed peace pipe and tomahawk and the PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP motto that had served as the universal reverse for presidential Indian Peace Medals since Thomas Jefferson's administration. Fillmore's presidency saw the continued expansion of the Indian agency system throughout the western territories, with agents distributing peace medals during treaty councils across the Great Plains and the newly organized territories. The discovery of gold in California during the preceding Taylor administration had accelerated westward migration, creating urgent need for diplomatic engagement with tribes along the emigrant trails.
Rarity Notes
Production quantities reflect Fillmore's roughly two-and-a-half-year presidency. Less commonly encountered than medals from two-term presidents.
