Description
The 1850 Dubosq & Company gold eagle is a ten-dollar denomination from Theodore Dubosq's San Francisco minting operation, representing the firm's largest known gold denomination. The eagle required approximately half an ounce of gold per coin, making it a substantial commitment of precious metal for each striking. The coin features the Dubosq & Company identification and TEN D. denomination in a design that showcases the firm's comparatively refined die work. Theodore Dubosq's background in the highly skilled Philadelphia watchcase trade provided him with metalworking expertise and manufacturing discipline that translated well to coin production. At the ten-dollar level, Dubosq's eagles would have served California's larger commercial transactions. The Dubosq gold eagle is among the rarest pieces in the firm's limited production range. Its scarcity, combined with the historical significance of Dubosq's connection to the U.S. Assay Office that would soon succeed all private California mints, makes it one of the more desirable ten-dollar territorial gold coins.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare. Fewer than 10 gold examples known. The eagle denomination is significantly scarcer than the half eagle.
