Description

The 1850 Baldwin & Company restrike in gilt white metal is a later numismatic production from the dies of one of California's most prominent private minting firms. Baldwin & Company, established by David C. Baldwin in San Francisco, was among the earliest and most prolific private mints during the California Gold Rush, producing gold coins in denominations from $5 through $20 beginning in 1850. This gilt white metal piece combines a tin-based white metal planchet with a thin gold wash or gilding to approximate the appearance of the original gold ten-dollar coin. The gilt finish was a common technique for producing attractive but affordable numismatic specimens from territorial gold dies, giving the piece a golden appearance while using inexpensive base metal for the core. The gilding ranges from bright and complete on well-preserved examples to spotty or nearly absent on pieces that have been handled or cleaned. Baldwin & Company's original gold coinage enjoyed wide circulation in early California, though the firm's coins were occasionally criticized for containing slightly less gold than their face value. The company operated during the critical period between the Gold Rush's onset and the establishment of the United States Assay Office of Gold in San Francisco (1850-1854), serving an essential monetary function despite the controversy over gold content. Restrikes in various metals were produced after the original dies passed into collectors' hands, with gilt white metal examples offering an accessible entry point for collectors interested in this important private mint.

Rarity Notes

Rare. Gilt white metal restrikes of Baldwin ten-dollar dies survive in approximately 10-20 examples. The gilding condition varies significantly and examples with substantially complete original gilt command premiums.
