Description

The 1849 Mormon Two-and-a-Half Dollar uniface lead obverse restrike with reeded edge is a variant of the K-1 lead impression from the Deseret Mint quarter eagle obverse die. The addition of a reeded edge distinguishes this as a separate production, struck at a different time or using different collar equipment. The reeded edge is particularly noteworthy because the original gold quarter eagles from the Deseret Mint featured plain edges. The application of edge reeding to a restrike indicates that the dies were used in conjunction with a collar die not originally associated with the Mormon coinage — borrowed from contemporary federal or private mint equipment. As with all lead die impressions, this piece preserves the obverse design with exceptional fidelity. The soft lead captures every nuance of the die surface, from the major design elements of the All-Seeing Eye, radiating glory, and bishop's mitre to the fine lettering of "HOLINESS TO THE LORD" and the date.

Rarity Notes

Extremely rare. The reeded edge variant is scarcer than the plain edge version. Only a handful of specimens are known to exist.
