CU-50c-1847O-01 Cud

Description

Among the earliest documented cuds in the half dollar series, CU-50c-1847O-01 appears on an 1847 New Orleans Mint Seated Liberty Half Dollar cataloged by Cuds on Coins. The Seated Liberty design by Christian Gobrecht served as the standard half dollar motif from 1839 through 1891, and the New Orleans Mint produced these coins during a period when multiple branch facilities supplemented Philadelphia's output to meet the nation's growing demand for silver coinage. Dies used at the New Orleans Mint were manufactured in Philadelphia and shipped south, and the rigors of transit combined with the mechanical stresses of striking could contribute to die fractures at the rim. A cud forms when a portion of the die edge breaks away, leaving a raised featureless area on the struck coin where design detail is absent. Pre-Civil War cuds from branch mint facilities are scarce survivors that document the physical limitations of mid-nineteenth-century die technology. Collectors of Seated Liberty varieties value this piece as evidence of the production challenges inherent in antebellum coinage.
