Description
German silver (nickel silver alloy) merchant token bearing the initials J.K.J., produced circa 1840-1860. The Rulau-Z designation indicates a supplemental catalog entry for tokens that could not be definitively attributed to a specific state or city. The initials J.K.J. have not been conclusively identified with any known merchant firm. German silver, an alloy of copper, zinc, and nickel, was a popular material for tokens because its silvery appearance gave an impression of higher value while remaining inexpensive to produce. German silver, 25mm. Mid-19th century merchant tokens reflect the growing sophistication of American retail commerce, as entrepreneurs adopted increasingly creative advertising methods. Cataloged in Robert Rulau's "Standard Catalog of United States Tokens 1700-1900," the definitive reference for American merchant and advertising tokens. Well-preserved specimens are scarce because these tokens circulated actively in commerce, accumulating wear from repeated handling.
Rarity Notes
Rare. Unattributed merchant token in the Rulau supplemental (Z) series. The mysterious J.K.J. initials have not been linked to a known firm, adding an element of numismatic detective work for researchers. German silver tokens from the mid-19th century are collected for both their alloy composition and the challenge of attribution.
