Description
The 1836 Capped Bust Half Dime - Small 5C is a dime minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Capped Bust Half Dimes 1829-1837 series. With a mintage of 1.9 million, this is a less common issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Small 5C and Large 5C reverse varieties. The series was nearing its end. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $125 to $1.6K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 1.35 grams, 15.9 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
