Description
This token from Newark, New Jersey dates to the 1830s and documents commercial activity in one of the most important industrial cities in the New York metropolitan area. Newark's manufacturing economy—centered on leather goods, jewelry, and brewing—made it a significant commercial center distinct from neighboring New York City. Newark's location on the Passaic River provided water power for manufacturing while its proximity to New York harbor ensured access to both raw materials and markets. The city's leather industry was particularly important, producing boots, shoes, saddles, and harness that supplied customers throughout the eastern United States. Newark merchants who issued tokens could expect their pieces to circulate throughout the broader New York–New Jersey commercial region. New Jersey Hard Times tokens are considerably less common than those from New York or Philadelphia, making Newark pieces of particular interest to collectors seeking geographic diversity. The state's position between these two major commercial centers meant that New Jersey merchants often used coins and tokens from both cities, creating a numismatic crossroads of sorts.
