Description
This reeded-edge brass variety of the Scovill Manufacturing Company token is distinguished from the plain-edge HT-107 by its edge treatment. The reeded edge, created by a grooved collar die during striking, adds a more coin-like feel and appearance to the token, as well as providing a security feature against edge clipping and shaving that was commonly associated with precious metal coinage. The decision to produce both plain-edge and reeded-edge varieties of the same design reflects the versatility of Scovill's minting operation. With collar dies available in both smooth and reeded configurations, the company could offer product variations to suit different customer preferences or production runs without the expense of cutting new obverse and reverse dies. Scovill's position as both token manufacturer and commercial enterprise gave them unique insight into the token market. As metalworkers, they understood production costs and material availability; as businessmen, they understood the commercial demand for cent substitutes during the coin shortage. This dual perspective helped them dominate the Hard Times Token market by offering high-quality products at competitive prices.
Rarity Notes
Scarce. The reeded-edge variant is less commonly encountered than the plain-edge version.
