Description

This variant of the Goodyear-associated Philadelphia token differs from HT-420 in edge type or metal composition. The token dates to 1829–36, corresponding to Charles Goodyear's active commercial period in Philadelphia before his India rubber experiments consumed his career entirely. The variant designation reflects production differences in the token's manufacture. Goodyear's connection to Philadelphia was formative. It was in this city that he first encountered the problems with natural rubber—its tendency to become sticky in heat and brittle in cold—that would drive his decades-long quest for a treatment process. His initial approach was to apply various chemical treatments to rubber goods, an endeavor that repeatedly failed commercially but gradually advanced his understanding of the material's chemistry. The existence of multiple token varieties indicates a degree of commercial activity that Goodyear maintained even as his business ventures struggled. Hardware merchants routinely issued tokens during this period, and the Goodyear tokens document a brief moment when their issuer was still a conventional Philadelphia shopkeeper rather than the legendary inventor he would become.
