(1826-27) Brass Token Rulau NY-295A, A.W. Hardie
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Brass merchant token issued by A.W. Hardie of New York City, circa 1826-1827. Hardie was a lower Manhattan merchant during the early republic. This plain-edge variety predates the Hard Times era and represents the earliest generation of American commercial token production. Early New York merchant tokens from the 1820s provide tangible evidence of the city's commercial culture before mass advertising and standardized coinage made such pieces unnecessary. Brass, 22mm. Tokens from this period reflect the decentralized commercial economy of the early republic, when individual merchants competed for recognition in rapidly growing American cities. Manhattan's dense commercial district produced more merchant tokens than any other American city, and New York pieces form the backbone of most serious Rulau collections. This piece is part of the diverse Rulau Miscellaneous series encompassing tokens that fall outside the major thematic categories.
Rarity Notes
Rare. Early New York merchant token from the late 1820s, predating the Hard Times era. Scarcer than the more common 1830s-1840s merchant issues. The plain-edge variety adds interest for die variety collectors.
