Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Silvered brass merchant token issued by Jonathan Rathbone of New York City, circa 1825. Rathbone was a dry goods merchant operating in lower Manhattan during the early republic period. The silvered finish gave the token the appearance of silver while using less expensive brass, a common technique for merchant advertising pieces intended to circulate among wealthier clientele. The Rulau-E (early) designation places this in the pre-Hard Times era of American token production. Silvered brass tokens are particularly vulnerable to surface wear revealing the base metal beneath. 22mm. Tokens from this period reflect the decentralized commercial economy of the early republic, when individual merchants competed for recognition in rapidly growing American cities. New York housed the nation's most accomplished die sinkers β the Lovetts, Bolen, George Lovett Sr. and Jr. β whose workshops in lower Manhattan produced tokens for clients across the country.
Rarity Notes
Rare. Early New York merchant token with silvered surface, making condition especially important for collectors since the silvering often shows wear. Pre-Hard Times merchant tokens from the 1820s are scarcer than those from the 1830s-1840s. Collected by specialists in early New York City commercial tokens.
