Description
Judd-46 is a silver private restrike of the 1823 Coronet Head large cent, struck from heavily rusted and shattered original federal dies. The obverse displays the Coronet Head Liberty portrait with the date 1823, but the die shows extensive cracks and rust pitting from decades of storage and unauthorized use. The reverse, struck from a die dating to approximately 1813, is similarly deteriorated with prominent die breaks. The silver composition distinguishes this restrike from the far more common copper versions and from the original copper cents. The coins were struck sometime in the 1860s-1870s from dies that had been removed from the Mint, by Philadelphia collector Joseph J. Mickley, though the actual maker remains unconfirmed. Specimens display medium to deep slate gray coloring with highly reflective surfaces and varied blue and silver highlights, characteristic of toned silver struck from heavily deteriorated dies.
