Description

Judd-C1818-1 is a large cent pattern from 1818, cataloged under the supplementary "C" (or appendix) numbering system used for pieces added to the Judd reference after the original sequential numbering was established. The obverse features the Matron Head (also called Coronet Head) portrait of Liberty facing left, with a coronet inscribed LIBERTY on her head, thirteen stars around the border, and the date 1818 below. The reverse displays the standard wreath enclosing ONE CENT with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border. The Matron Head design was introduced in 1816, replacing John Reich's Classic Head. This pattern may represent a die trial, a proposed design modification, or a restrike produced for numismatic purposes. The "C" prefix in the Judd number indicates it was added to the catalog as an appendix entry rather than being included in the original sequential listings.
