Description

The 1818 Capped Bust Quarter is a quarter produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Capped Bust Quarters 1815-1838 series. With a mintage of 361,174, this is a less common issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1818/5 overdate is a collected variety. Production remained at Philadelphia only, as was standard for the denomination. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $166 to $9.3K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 89.2% silver, 10.8% copper, weighing 6.74 grams, 27.5 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #5322.
