Description
Judd-44a is the unique counterpunched variety of the 1814 platinum half dollar, distinguished from J-44 by dramatic post-striking modifications. This specimen was defaced with a small letter "P" punched into the obverse a total of 33 times using a hand punch outside of the coining press, as evidenced by corresponding bulges on the reverse opposite each punch mark. Additionally, the word "Platina" was hand-engraved in cursive script on the reverse above the eagle's head, explicitly identifying the metal. PCGS assigned this piece a separate Judd number (J-44a) to differentiate it from unmarked 1814 platinum half dollars. The punching and engraving were done at the Mint as a means of identifying the experimental metal or preventing the coin from entering circulation at face value. This is the only confirmed example of J-44 in private hands, making it one of the most important early American pattern coins.
