Description

Judd-42 is a copper restrike of the 1813 Capped Bust half dollar, produced from original federal dies that were retired after the 1813 production run. The obverse features John Reich's Capped Bust Liberty portrait facing left, wearing a mob cap with LIBERTY inscribed on the band, stars around the border, and the date 1813 below. The reverse displays a spread eagle with a shield on its breast, olive branch and arrows in its talons, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border, and 50 C. below. The regular 1813 Capped Bust half dollar had a substantial mintage of 1,241,903 pieces, making it one of the more common dates in the series. However, this copper restrike is extraordinarily rare, produced in the 1850s or 1860s from discarded Mint dies as a numismatic curiosity. The copper composition immediately distinguishes it from the silver originals.
