Description
The 1808 Draped Bust to Left Half Eagle is a Gold Half Eagle produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Draped Bust to Left Half Eagles 1807-1812 series. With a mintage of 55,578, this is a less common issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a mob cap or turban with a larger, draped bust and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Multiple die varieties exist. The new design was well-received and struck in reasonable numbers. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $5.1K to $43K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% copper, weighing 8.75 grams, 25 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8102.
