Description

This 1802 Draped Bust Large Cent carries a reverse cud on the famous 1/000 Fraction variety, where the fraction 1/100 on the reverse was mistakenly engraved as 1/000 with three zeros instead of a 1 followed by two zeros. This is the second documented cud for the variety and appears on the reverse side. A cud is a raised blank area caused by a die rim fragment breaking away during production. Attributed by Cuds on Coins. The 1/000 fraction error is one of the most celebrated early United States Mint blunders, representing a genuine engraving mistake on the die where the fraction denominator was cut incorrectly. Combined with the reverse cud break, this coin exhibits two distinct types of die-related anomalies: a deliberate engraving error in the fraction and an accidental structural failure at the die rim. Large Cents from this period were struck on thick copper planchets that imposed heavy stress on dies, making cud breaks relatively common.
