Description

This 1800 Draped Bust Large Cent is the third documented cud for the 1800/79 Overdate variety. A cud forms when a section of the die rim fractures and separates, leaving a raised blank area on the struck coin where die steel is missing. This is a different break location from the second cud on the same overdate variety, demonstrating that the dies used for this issue experienced multiple rim failures during their production run. Attributed by Cuds on Coins. The 1800/79 Overdate is among the most intriguing early Large Cent varieties, with the earlier date visible beneath the 1800 punch providing direct evidence of the early Mint's die recycling practices. Robert Scot's Draped Bust design, featuring Liberty with flowing hair, was struck on large copper planchets that put considerable stress on the dies, contributing to the frequency of cud breaks found on early Large Cent issues from this era.
