Description
The 1798 Capped Bust to Right Half Eagle - Large 8, 14 Star Reverse is a Gold Half Eagle minted at the Philadelphia Mint, within the Capped Bust to Right Half Eagles 1795-1807 series. With a mintage of 24,867, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 4 mint variants by mintage, with 33% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a cloth cap (pileus) and the reverse displays a small, naturalistic eagle perched on a palm branch within a wreath (1795-1798) or a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM (1795-1807). The 1798 Small Eagle reverse is a major rarity with very few known. The Large Eagle (Heraldic Eagle) reverse was introduced this year. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $7.4K to $144K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 91.7% gold, 8.3% copper, weighing 8.75 grams, 25 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8080.
