Description
The Judd-13 is the white metal version of the 1792 Eagle-on-Globe Quarter Dollar pattern, sharing the same dies as the copper J-12 but struck in a white metal alloy analyzed by NGC as approximately 50% lead and 48% tin. The obverse and reverse designs are identical to J-12: Liberty facing right with hair in a ribbon, and the iconic eagle perched on a globe, all by Joseph Wright. Only four specimens are known to exist, and just two are in private hands — the other two reside in the American Numismatic Society and the Smithsonian Institution. The known specimens can be divided into two groups based on edge characteristics: one group struck without a collar (resulting in slightly irregular edges) and another struck with a collar producing more uniform edges. Only two specimens were known until 2002, when two additional white metal examples were recognized in a museum display, spectacularly doubling the known population. The most notable private specimen was consigned by the New-York Historical Society and sold at Heritage Auctions in 2021.
