Description
This 1783 silver medal (Betts-610) commemorates the Treaty of Paris, the specific agreement between Great Britain and the United States signed on September 3, 1783, that formally ended the American Revolutionary War. The treaty recognized American independence, established boundaries for the new nation extending from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mississippi River and from Canada to Florida, and addressed issues of debts, property, and prisoner exchange. Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay negotiated the treaty for the American side. Medallic commemoration of colonial events was not limited to military victories — treaties, explorations, trading company foundings, missionary activities, and colonial administrative milestones all received medallic recognition. The Treaty of Paris is one of the most important documents in American history, and medals commemorating it are among the most historically significant in the entire Betts catalog.
