Description

This 1782 silver medal (Betts-603) commemorates Holland receiving John Adams as the first American ambassador, a landmark moment in the diplomatic history of the United States. On April 19, 1782 — exactly seven years after the battles of Lexington and Concord — the Dutch Republic officially recognized the United States and received Adams as its minister plenipotentiary. Adams had been working tirelessly in the Netherlands since 1780 to secure Dutch recognition and loans for the American cause. The Dutch recognition was the second by a major European power after France, and Adams subsequently negotiated crucial Dutch loans that kept the American government solvent during the final years of the war. Medal production technology evolved significantly during the Betts period, from the hand-engraved dies and screw presses of the sixteenth century to the more mechanized operations that became standard by the mid-eighteenth century. This medal commemorates one of Adams's greatest diplomatic achievements.
