Description
Betts-442 in silver commemorates the Peace of Europe, marking the diplomatic resolution of the Seven Years' War. The Treaty of Paris, signed on February 10, 1763, redrew the colonial map of the world: France ceded Canada and all territory east of the Mississippi to Britain, Spain ceded Florida to Britain, and France compensated Spain with Louisiana west of the Mississippi. The medal celebrates the restoration of peace after seven years of global conflict that had devastated parts of Europe and permanently altered colonial boundaries in the Americas. The "Peace of Europe" title emphasizes the continental dimension of the settlement, though the colonial implications were equally profound. Silver strikings of peace medals were produced for diplomatic distribution and for collectors who valued the artistic and historical commemoration of the war's conclusion. The 1763 peace created the geopolitical conditions that would lead, within a dozen years, to the American Revolution.
Rarity Notes
