(1762) Bronze Medal Betts-441, Victories of 1762
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Betts-441 in bronze commemorates the Victories of 1762, the final major campaign year of the Seven Years' War. The year 1762 saw the British capture of Havana and Manila, two of Spain's most important colonial strongholds, after Spain entered the war as France's ally. The siege and capture of Havana (June-August 1762) was particularly significant, as it gave Britain control of Cuba and access to the enormous wealth of the Spanish Caribbean. Manila's capture gave Britain a foothold in the Philippines. These victories, combined with continuing success against France, left Britain in an overwhelmingly strong negotiating position at the peace talks. The bronze composition made this medal accessible to the broad public that followed the war's progress. Betts-441 documents the culminating triumphs that shaped the Treaty of Paris and redrrew the map of colonial empires.
