Description

Betts-440 in silver commemorates the coronation of George III and Queen Charlotte in 1761. George III ascended to the British throne in October 1760 and was crowned the following year, becoming the monarch who would reign during the American Revolution. His coronation medal has particular significance in the Betts catalog because George III's reign defined the relationship between Britain and its American colonies from the era of triumph in the Seven Years' War through the crisis of independence. The medal's obverse features the paired portraits of George III and Queen Charlotte, while the reverse presents coronation imagery. Silver coronation medals were produced for distribution at the ceremony and to colonial officials abroad. This medal documents the accession of the monarch whose policies would ultimately drive the American colonies to revolution, making it a poignant artifact of the pre-Revolutionary imperial relationship.

Rarity Notes

Silver George III coronation medal. Historical significance enhanced by the American Revolution connection. Scarce.
