Description

Betts-429 in silver commemorates the British capture of Montreal on September 8, 1760, the event that completed the conquest of New France and ended over 150 years of French colonial rule in Canada. Three British armies converged on Montreal from different directions -- Amherst from the west, Murray from Quebec, and Haviland from the south -- leaving the French garrison surrounded with no hope of relief. Governor Vaudreuil surrendered the entire colony of New France, including all French posts in the Great Lakes and Mississippi regions, making the capitulation at Montreal one of the most consequential military surrenders in history. This silver medal celebrates the completion of Britain's North American triumph, which had begun with the capture of Louisbourg in 1758 and Quebec in 1759. The silver composition reflects the importance of this concluding victory.

Rarity Notes

Silver Montreal Taken medal. Celebrates the completion of the conquest of Canada. Scarce and historically significant.
