Description
Betts-410 in gold (AV) is the rarest and most valuable version of this Louisbourg medal, struck in precious metal for the most important recipients. Gold versions of military campaign medals were typically presented to royalty, commanding generals, or admirals as marks of the highest distinction. The capture of Louisbourg in 1758 was considered important enough to warrant gold presentation medals, reflecting the enormous strategic significance of removing France's Atlantic stronghold. General Jeffrey Amherst, Admiral Edward Boscawen, and other senior commanders was among the intended recipients of gold strikings. The gold medal preserves the same design as the bronze and silver versions of Betts-410 but in a format that conveyed the nation's highest gratitude for military service. Gold Betts medals from the Seven Years' War are extraordinarily rare and represent some of the most important objects in colonial American numismatics.
Rarity Notes
