(1758) Brass Medal Betts-405, Louisbourg
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Betts-405 in brass is another Louisbourg medal variant from 1758, adding to the remarkable variety of medals produced to celebrate the British capture of France's Atlantic stronghold. Brass strikings were produced commercially in England for a public eager to commemorate the victory. The fall of Louisbourg was front-page news throughout the British Empire, and medal makers responded to public demand with numerous designs in various metals. Betts-405 features design elements distinct from the other Louisbourg numbers, though all share the common theme of celebrating the successful siege. The brass composition gives this medal an attractive golden appearance that distinguished it from the more common bronze versions. Louisbourg medals in brass are somewhat scarcer than their bronze counterparts, as brass required more expensive materials and was produced in somewhat smaller quantities for the commercial market.
Rarity Notes
