Description

This 1756 silver jeton (Betts-393 variant) is a Franco-American piece featuring a bust variant with reverse eagle (RE) design. Jetons were small medal-like pieces originally used as calculation tokens but by the eighteenth century served primarily as attendance tokens for official bodies and as commemorative pieces. Franco-American jetons were produced by the French colonial administration to document events in New France (Canada and Louisiana). The bust variant indicates a different portrait die from the standard Betts-393, and the "RE" designates the reverse eagle motif. The dissemination of commemorative medals through diplomatic channels, military distribution, and commercial sale created a network of information about New World events that complemented printed news and official correspondence. The 1756 date falls during the early years of the French and Indian War, when France was achieving notable successes under the Marquis de Montcalm.
