Description

This silver medal, Betts-211, is a silver striking of an Admiral Vernon medal, making it significantly rarer than the common bath metal varieties. Silver Vernon medals were produced in much smaller quantities and purchased by wealthier collectors or supporters of Vernon's political faction. The capture of Porto Bello had immediate political ramifications in Britain, strengthening the war party led by Vernon and William Pitt the Elder (father of the future Prime Minister) against Robert Walpole's more cautious government. Colonial medals served multiple functions simultaneously: as propaganda tools promoting imperial policy, as diplomatic gifts establishing relationships with indigenous peoples and rival powers, and as commemorative art preserving historical memory. Silver Vernon medals served both as commemoratives and as political badges, displaying the owner's support for an aggressive colonial policy against Spain.

Rarity Notes
