Description

This 1739 bronze medal, cataloged as Adams-Chao PB 2-D, shares obverse die 2 with the PB 2-C variety but pairs it with reverse die D. The different reverse creates a distinct variety while reusing the same obverse die, a standard cost-saving practice in the medal trade. Reverse die D features a different arrangement of Porto Bello imagery — such as a different angle on the harbor, a ship arrangement, or alternative commemorative text. The PB subgroup medals are particularly valued by military historians because their non-portrait designs often contain more topographical and naval detail than the portrait types. Porto Bello (modern Portobelo, Panama) was a critical node in Spain's colonial trade system, hosting the annual treasure fairs where silver from Peru was loaded onto galleons bound for Spain. Its capture disrupted this trade and demonstrated British naval reach into Spain's colonial heartland. Struck in copper alloy (AE), this medal documents the strategic significance of Vernon's victory.

Rarity Notes

Scarce. The PB 2-D reverse variant is less commonly encountered than PB 2-C.
