Description
This 1723 Wood's Hibernia Halfpenny in silver is a special off-metal striking of the standard copper halfpenny type. The "P" in the designation may refer to a proof or presentation striking distinction. The obverse features the laureate bust of George I facing right with the royal legend, while the reverse displays the seated Hibernia with her harp and the HIBERNIA legend dated 1723. Like other silver strikings in the Wood's Hibernia series, this piece was not intended for circulation at face value but was produced as a presentation piece, pattern, or numismatic specimen. The halfpenny in silver would have had an intrinsic metal value many times its face denomination, making it a prestigious gift or sample. William Wood's Bristol works had the capability to strike in various metals, and silver examples of his productions were distributed to supporters, officials, and potential investors as evidence of the coinage's quality and his mint's capabilities. The 1723 halfpenny is one of the most heavily produced types in the Hibernia series, making the silver version a premium complement to the abundant copper issue. Silver Hibernia halfpennies are known for multiple dates and varieties, forming a small but elite subset of the broader series that attracts advanced collectors and researchers. The coin measures approximately 28mm in diameter, matching the copper version but with the substantially greater weight of silver.
Rarity Notes
Very rare. Silver halfpenny strikings are known in very small numbers and command strong premiums over copper examples.
