Description
Betts-96 in silver is another variety within the Vigo Bay medal series, commemorating the Anglo-Dutch naval triumph of October 1702. Each Betts number in the Vigo Bay group (93-101) represents a distinct medal design, and Betts-96 features its own unique combination of obverse and reverse imagery relating to the battle. The action at Vigo Bay was remarkable for its audacity -- the allied fleet had to force its way past shore batteries and a heavy boom chain to reach the Franco-Spanish ships anchored within the protected harbor. The complete destruction or capture of the enemy fleet, including treasure ships returning from the Americas, electrified both England and the Netherlands. This silver striking represents a premium version of the Betts-96 design, produced in smaller numbers than bronze and commanding higher collector interest. The variety of medal designs produced for Vigo Bay reflects the battle's enormous propaganda value for the Anglo-Dutch alliance in the opening year of the War of the Spanish Succession.
Rarity Notes
Silver striking of Betts-96. Scarce composition within the Vigo Bay series. Strong collector demand.
