Modern Dollar Programs: Presidential, Innovation, and Beyond
The New Golden Age of Dollar Coins
Since the Sacagawea Dollar debuted in 2000, the dollar denomination has become a showcase for rotating designs and historical themes. The Presidential Dollar Program (2007-2016+) honored every president with individually designed obverses. The American Innovation Dollar (2018-2032) celebrates inventions and innovators from each state and territory.
The 2007 Washington dollar made headlines when the "Godless Dollar" error — missing the edge-incused "IN GOD WE TRUST" — attracted massive media attention and public interest.
The Sacagawea/Native American Dollar series itself has evolved from a single fixed design to annually rotating reverses honoring Native American contributions. And the 2000-P "Cheerios Dollar" variety — with a subtly different eagle tail feather detail — is a valuable modern rarity.
The 2026 Semiquincentennial coins, celebrating America's 250th birthday, will likely generate significant collector interest as a once-in-a-lifetime event.
