Description
This Norse Medal in large format silvered composition is a variant of the Norse American Centennial medal series. The larger format provides increased detail and visual impact compared to the standard-sized medals. Silvering — applying a thin silver layer to a base metal — gives this piece an attractive silver appearance at lower cost than solid silver. The Norse American Centennial in 1925 celebrated the arrival of the sloop Restauration at New York Harbor in October 1825, carrying the first organized group of Norwegian immigrants to America. Medal collecting has experienced renewed interest in recent decades as numismatists have recognized these pieces as historical artifacts deserving the same scholarly attention given to coins and currency. The Fraser-designed medal is one of the most celebrated American commemorative medal designs of the 1920s.
