Description

This undated variant of the Hiram Judson Syracuse token extends the series from the dated HT-345/346 pieces. Judson's combination business—watchmaker, silversmith, jeweler, military goods dealer, and music retailer—epitomized the diversified commercial establishments found in the small cities and towns along the Erie Canal during the Hard Times era. The "D" prefix in the Rulau numbering system indicates a variety added in a later edition of the catalog, discovered after the original HT-345 and HT-346 entries and the subsequently added HT-C346. Each new discovery expands our understanding of the production scope and circulation patterns of Judson's tokens in the Syracuse area. The Erie Canal's role in creating Syracuse's commercial prosperity cannot be overstated. Before the canal's completion in 1825, the area was a small settlement centered on salt springs. Within a decade, the canal had transformed it into a thriving commercial center where goods from New York City, Albany, and the western frontier converged. Merchants like Judson prospered by serving the canal traffic—travelers, boat crews, and the growing permanent population that the canal's commerce attracted.
