Description
This undated medal features William Henry Harrison, the ninth President of the United States who served the shortest term in American history — just 31 days in 1841. Harrison, a hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811) and the Battle of the Thames (1813), campaigned for president on the famous "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too" slogan. He delivered the longest inaugural address in presidential history during a cold, rainy day, contracted pneumonia, and died on April 4, 1841. The medallic commemorative tradition in America accelerated during the centennial celebrations of the late nineteenth century, with the 1876 Centennial Exposition generating an unprecedented number of medallic issues. Numismatic conventions and specialized shows provide medal collectors with opportunities to examine pieces in person, compare varieties, and access dealer inventories that may not be available through online channels. His death established the precedent of vice-presidential succession that would shape American governance.
