Description
This undated medal features William Howard Taft, the twenty-seventh President of the United States who served from 1909 to 1913. Taft, who weighed over 300 pounds, was the only person to serve as both President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1921-1930) — and by his own account preferred the latter position. His presidency was overshadowed by the progressive insurgency within his own party that led to Theodore Roosevelt's third-party challenge in 1912, splitting the Republican vote and electing Woodrow Wilson. The medallic commemorative tradition in America accelerated during the centennial celebrations of the late nineteenth century, with the 1876 Centennial Exposition generating an unprecedented number of medallic issues. This presidential portrait medal documents Taft's place in the succession of American chief executives.
