Coin Details
Description
This undated uniface bronze medal bears the design of the Pacific Coast Numismatic Society (PCNS), struck on one side only with a blank reverse. Bronze — the traditional alloy of copper and tin — is the most venerable of medallic metals, used for commemorative and award medals since antiquity. This uniface bronze PCNS medal served as an award, meeting prize, or recognition piece for society members or events. The distinction between this bronze version and its brass counterpart reflects the PCNS practice of offering medals in multiple compositions. Bronze develops a distinctive brown patina over time that many collectors find aesthetically superior to the brighter tones of brass, and the slightly different alloy composition produces finer detail reproduction in the striking process. PCNS has been issuing medals since its early decades, building a body of club exonumia that documents the society's activities and recognizes contributions to Pacific Coast numismatics. These uniface pieces, produced in very limited numbers for specific occasions, are among the more elusive PCNS issues and are sought by specialists in numismatic club memorabilia.
Rarity Notes
Uniface bronze, undated. Very limited production as a PCNS award or recognition piece. Bronze version may be slightly scarcer than the brass uniface.
