Description
This undated 3-inch bronze medal of Jimmy Carter is a 76mm display-format version of the U.S. Mint's presidential medal for the thirty-ninth President (1977-1981). The larger 76mm diameter provides a commanding display piece that showcases the Mint's engraving of Carter's portrait with exceptional detail. James Earl Carter Jr. (born 1924) was a Georgia peanut farmer, naval officer, and one-term governor who won the presidency in 1976 as a Washington outsider in the aftermath of Watergate. His presidency was marked by the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel — one of the most significant diplomatic achievements of the twentieth century — as well as the Panama Canal Treaties, the establishment of the Department of Energy and Department of Education, and the deregulation of several major industries. Carter's presidency was also beset by challenges including the energy crisis, double-digit inflation, and the Iran hostage crisis, which dominated his final year in office and contributed to his 1980 defeat by Ronald Reagan. After leaving office, Carter built the most consequential post-presidency in American history, founding the Carter Center, mediating international conflicts, monitoring elections worldwide, building houses with Habitat for Humanity, and winning the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize. He became the longest-lived president in American history at 100 years old. The 76mm bronze medal format provides a substantial commemorative piece honoring Carter's decades of public service.
